Pepsi has decided to end its innings with Sachin Tendulkar. The cricket icon, a company source said, had not “got back” to a request to “lower his price” for renewing his contract, which expired around two months back. Sachin now earns Rs 4...

Is it a matter of Pepsi’s inability to afford Sachin or is just a meek excuse to put him off? Well, he is an icon but his charm in media seems to be fading away. I know it’s so bitter a reality. Dhoni, Ishant, and what not? They are all ready to occupy his position, though not plausible at the moment.

Sachin may be a great national icon, but I think his time is seriously up. He’s just stretching his career without much fruitful returns and Pepsi showing him the door just goes on to show that they need heroes who have recent performances backing their star status and not feats achieved a decade ago!!!

I am not writing this in condemnation of Pepsi’s decision ,its a pure business decision, but at the sheer ignorance of your comment... do u know Sachin’s batting average in the last one year ? do u know who won us the CB series in Australia last year ? ( the only big tournament the so called ” young heroes ” have won other than a stupid 20/20 tamasha world cup )...

In the world of business, especially in advertising, only the rising sun is worshipped. Who cares for Sachin, when you have all the new heroes thrown up by the IPL?

Ad companies are not unjustified in dropping Tendulkar. In the recent past what has he done? He has been in the news only for his injuries. OK, he is an icon. I respect him for the cricketing genius he is (or was?). But life moves on.

I think it is right to say that Sachin just got too expensive for Pepsi. If it is their decision, then so be it, It in no way makes Sachin any lesser of a player or a legend in his chosen art-form.

@Asmita, Balbhadra

Since when are number of ads a measure of players talent and as Aswin rightly pointed out, do you know what Sachin did in CB series and Test series prior to that?? Adam Glichrist told that he ”single handedly won the two finals for India” and it is hard to argue against that. Greatness of a player is measured in playing against the best team of his generation. At 35 Sachin went to Australia and played some of the best cricket sen down under. Yet, you say his ”time is up”!!!

He is not stretching his career, he is playing like he always had. That is what he did recently and he DID NOT go to Bangladesh and LOSE or got to Pakistan and LOSE like the so called ’Latest Heroes’

I never said that he is a bad player. He is one of the legends of cricket. But business has no emotions. With the plethora of new ’heroes’ thrown up by IPL, the attention of today’s generation has shifted to the younger lot of players.

Pepsi’s products are mostly targetted towards that segment. They have follow the popular taste and popularity. Personally I think Sachin is growing older and Indian cricket needs to prepare a fresh lot for the next world cup.
